Travelle Goes To Tokyo with Tokyo Mode Addict
As a graphic designer and founder of lifestyle blog Tokyo Mode Addict, Yukie knows just how to capture the best of style, food and travel with a distinctly Japanese twist. Which comes as no surprise because this Singapore raised blogger has deep roots in Japan. If you want the lowdown on Tokyo fashion and cuisine from someone who actually lives it- well, get ready to take notes. Yukie tells Travelle all about what a lady needs to know style and health-wise before a trip to Japan’s vibrant capital.
What don’t we know about Tokyo?
Tokyo is the capital of aesthetics. It’s an ideal city for a woman to come thrill her senses through sight and taste at every corner. Japan is so much more than the common traveler’s guide to Sushi, Ramen and Maid Cafes. While Instagram is a useful resource for seeing what locals are up to, I would recommend heading down to a local bookstore in Japan for better findings. Tokyo has numerous Japanese magazines with admirable visual references for places to go!
Tell us about the local street style.
The most peculiar yet amazing thing about Japan is the expansive range of style when it comes to fashion, especially amongst the young. You could see people with completely opposite styles walking down the same street. However, if I were to point out one collective trademark, it would be that the locals are not afraid to add on layers to their outfits.
Girls’ night out- what do we wear?
I love dresses. My closet is pretty much a gale of fifty shades of dresses. But a plunging neckline or off-shoulder pieces are always a good excuse to show skin during summer!
If we’re traveling for business, is there anything a woman should(n’t) wear to work meetings?
Japan is a conservative and image conscious society, and looking presentable seems to be a necessity there. There are many do’s and don'ts when it comes to cooperate work wear in Japan. I would recommend reading about it in more detail on the internet.
What makes up your work wardrobe?
Following young Japanese designers and brands has always been my protocol for style inspirations. Though I do mix pieces from international labels, my taste was drawn from Japanese fashion. I especially love pieces with fabrics of caliber from brands like Egoist and shoes from Murua.
In terms of beauty products, what should we stash in our carry-on for trip to Japan?
Tokyo’s climate can get rather dry in the autumn and winter. A good moisturizer would be most useful. However, summer in Tokyo is a one-way street to a sticky and messy situation when humidity rears its ugly head. This is where hair-oil control products may save some lives.
Best way for ladies to get some exercise in?
Quite frankly- walking. People in Japan, and especially in Tokyo, do some serious amount of walking in their daily commutes. As efficient as transportation is over there, it costs quite a bit.
How can we enjoy local cuisine while eating healthy?Amongst Asian food, Japanese food is most healthy in my opinion. They are pioneers at giving just enough seasoning with fresh ingredients. Tofu dishes and rice bowls with different toppings at Tokyo cafes are my Japanese root’s calling.
What are some of your favorite restaurants with healthy dishes?
Muji Café, Mame-cha and Bowls Café are all great places to eat.
