Pre-Ski Skincare Prep
By Stephanie DeRosa
Heading to the cabin for a ski trip this winter? We know you’re excited to bust out your best skiing moves, but you won’t be too thrilled with the aftermath: a raw face and dry, flaky skin. Before taking it outside, it’s important to make sure your skin is prepped for cold temps, sun, and the wind that comes with swooshing down snow covered hills at 30mph. Travelle has the skincare know-how to keep you looking polished while killing it on the slopes.
Don’t Skip The Sunscreen
You might be thinking “but it’s winter!” Guess what—it doesn’t matter. UV radiation is still coming through and snow can reflect up to 80 percent of it. So be sure to pack a bottle of SPF 30 sunscreen - like Sisley Paris' 'Super Stick Solaire' Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 - before your next getaway into the mountains. Slather it onto your face (and any other areas of exposed skin!) a half hour before going out and make a conscious effort to reapply every two hours.
Layer On Lotion
Lotion up head to toe before getting into your ski gear with a moisturizer that contains ingredients like glycerin, lactic acid, petroleum, ceramides and hyaluronic acid. They’ll hydrate, trap in moisture, and keep skin feeling silky smooth while you do your thing on the slopes. Go extra heavy on hands to prevent that all too common red, scaly look. And slathering on coconut oil on particularly dry spots afterwards is never a bad idea, either.
Give Your Lips Love
There’s nothing fun or sexy about dry, cracked, wind burned lips. Keep yourself kissable by using a deep moisturizing lip balm with a high SPF when you hit the slopes. Travelle loves Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm SPF 20, and the berry shade keeps frosty lips looking rosy. And don’t forget to keep it coming—slip it into your pocket and reapply as often as needed. You’ll also want to bring along a treatment that exfoliates and rehydrates lips to use in the evening after a long day out in the elements.
Gentle Cleansing
When it comes time to wash, reach for soap free cleansers. They are much gentler on parched skin and will help your face, hands and body retain moisture for a soft, glowy look and feel. Be sure to avoid using hand sanitizer whenever possible—while it kills those yucky germs, its high alcohol content seriously dries out skin.
Smooth That Skin
No dead, dry cells caking up here! Exfoliate your face and body to remove flakes and expose skin that can more easily absorb lotion. You’ll look brighter and smoother for it. Just remember to do it lightly with a gentle exfoliator; heavy exfoliation can irritate already sensitive skin, leaving it dryer and redder than a whole day of skiing in frigid winter weather. Ahava Dead SeaWater Mineral Body Exfoliator sloughs gently and naturally.
Hydrate Naturally
As always, drinking lots of water is an easy and healthy way to give your skin the care it needs. Getting those 64 ounces of H2O a day will give your skin the extra oomph it needs when braving exposure on the slopes. It maintains your supple, smooth skin while preventing irritation and cracking from cold air and wind.
