So many people are saying the 90’s are back, and they are so right. Besides being the best era for music and iconic celebrity couples (I’m looking at you, Britney and JT), the 90’s were also an amazing time for trends - that amazingly, are great to work into your traveling wardrobe, too! From chokers to denim skirts, these easy breezy pieces work just as well for fuss-free security checks, as they do for post-touchdown soirees. Although we won’t be seeing any denim on denim outfits hitting the red carpet anytime soon (or will we?), there are plenty of old trends that have made their way back into Travelle's style guide.
Not only are chokers back, but they’re taking the world by storm. They're easy to put on and take off, which means they won't be an issue at the metal detectors or when getting your in-flight moisturising routine! From velvet, to chokers with charms, to the classic tattoo choker, these are the trendiest accessory to sport these days. What we love about this trend is that you can dress it up just as easily as you can dress it down, which is precisely why chokers are perfect for travel. Say you’re meeting a friend for dinner an hour after you land – a cute choker would complement your dinner outfit without being too bold to wear with your airport leggings. Our personal favorite is of the thin velvet variety because it’s simple, yet bold – but so many stores have an amazing selection!
When we first heard that these were back, we were admittedly skeptical. Our first thought was the classic denim skirts with bedazzled pockets that we rocked in elementary school. Luckily, these skirts are nothing like that. With trendy rips and amazing designs (like buttons down the front – a personal fave!), these skirts received the greatest makeover. They come in so many styles, so you’re sure to find the perfect option for going out, going to a meeting, or even just exploring. Travelle recommends the Mini Santa Cruz Button Front Skirt from Rag and Bone. Speaking of denim…
These never really went completely out of style, but now they’re definitely back in their prime. We love that there’s so much variation among the types of ripped jeans. From skinny jeans that are only ripped in the knees, to boyfriend jeans that have more rips than material, these are the perfect trend to complete any casual outfit. Whether you’re rocking them as you explore a new city, or pairing them with a cozy tee at the airport, you can’t go wrong with this staple. We’re bringing TopShop back to your attention with the MOTO Mid Blue Rip Jamie Jeans – they’re the perfect wash to match anything and they seriously fit like a glove.
These have been on their up slope for a few years now, but their presence is definitely known! Differing from their typical 90’s look, Doc Martens are now used for the same purpose as combat boots. Translation: rock these with skinny jeans or leggings to make the casual look absolutely adorable. They’re a surefire way to look awesome at the airport while still feeling completely comfy. These come in a ton of cute colors and styles, but the black ones have made the biggest resurgence.
The demand for these shoes are almost as high as the flatforms themsevles! Huge, bold platforms are back. Surprisingly, they’re not as hard to walk in as you’d expect - while the heel is quite high, the actual slope of the shoe is quite gentle, so actually offering the ball and arch of your foot a lot of cushioning, and making sure that your foot isn't arched painfully. This makes them perfect for trendy, touristy days when you’ll be taking a ton of pictures. They’re also a great option for going out without waking up to a million blisters the next morning. We personally recommend black, but there are so many fun shades that have been coming up with this trend. Travelle’s ultimate pro- tip: combine these with the denim skirt and the choker, and throw in an off the shoulder top, and you’re sure to look like a 10. We love these Steve Madden platforms, but there are so many fun options out there to choose from!
So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to check out all of these trends and see which ones will make it into your suitcase. Be sure to check out our Instagram for some more inspiration on how to rock these trends.
