It's official! Summer is almost here. Whether it's staycation and laying out in the park, weekends away in the countryside, or frolicking in the sun to the sound of the ocean, there is plenty of fun ahead to look forward to.
If you're a beach bum like me, you're stocking up on bikinis and sundresses scheming your first getaway. But a true beach babe not only rocks a great new two piece, but she also takes care of her summer hair. It's easy to forget that while bronzed skin and surfer chick tresses make a fabulous combo, the aftermath may be less so. While I don't underestimate the importance of keeping your body protected with gobbles of sunscreen, I'll start from the top - your hair.
The Salty Truth
Beach waves are so in, Bumble and Bumble made a set so you can get them in your apartment in the middle of winter. What you may not realize though is that while saltwater does wonders for your body, it wrecks havoc on your hair. The high salt content strips out moisture from your locks and the wind and sand tangle them into knots if that wasn’t bad enough. Ideally, you should keep your head above water, but, that's no fun, so here are some ways to take care of your summer hair so it stays healthy and gorgeous after summer is over despite some misbehavior.
Cover Your Hair To Keep It Healthy
Making a fashion statement with a scarf or hat may be your best bet. Head accessories not only add extra UV protection and keep your hair from tangling, but they also help your scalp retain moisture. If you color your hair, this may save you from having to go back to the hair salon after your trip.
Let Nature Style You
Avoiding harsh styling products is key in protecting your hair from getting damaged in the sun. Skip gels, hairsprays, and pastes while out and about. Instead, if you have dry hair like I do, double up on conditioner after shampooing and use a leave in a moisturizing cream with SPF like Swimcap. To continue nourishing and moisturizing your locks throughout the day, opt for essential hair care products like Kérastase Soleil Micro-Voile Protecteur and Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil. You can throw them in your bag and reapply as needed for perfect beach hair. Argan oil could also help retain moisture and softness, but it’s quite dreadful to travel with.
Comb With Caution
After a day on the beach, apply conditioner before combing your hair in the shower so that any knots become untangled or else you're likely to break it in the process. This also applies to when you rinse off after going swimming to avoid frizz and damage that will only get worse as the summer progresses.
Keep Your Hair Away From Hot Styling Tools
Your already stressed hair is better off without the extra heat from a blow dryer or curling iron, so let it air dry whenever possible. If your hair doesn't look great without a little help (I can relate), try braiding it or putting it in a bun with leave in conditioner for a soft wavy look. As a last resort, if you have to go there, use a heat protecting cream like Phyto PHYTOKÉRATINE Repairing Thermal Protectant Spray or Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Primer before styling.
Extra Beauty Credit
It's hard to carry on dozens of bottles of lotions and potions, but if you're driving and don't mind the extra liquids, add an extra step by applying a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment, such as the famed Philip Kingsley Elasticizer, which delivers a rush of moisture inside the hair cuticle and improves its elasticity.
And just like that, no more parched and brittle locks!
